Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letter is not signed but appears to be in Knox's handwriting. Instructs Gleason to purchase 20,340 acres of land located between Belfast and New Landrian in Maine. Describes the boundary lines and also instructs Gleason to note the quality of the land. Addressee name was added at a later date.
