Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letter is not signed but appears to be in Knox's handwriting. Knox explains the financial difficulties he is having. Describes his limestone business and boasts over its quality. Requests Steven's takes Knox's limestone under his protection and form contracts on Knox's behalf. Provides the selling prices of the stone and encourages Masons; to try his stone. Asks for Steven's candid opinion on the subject. Addressee name was added later in red pen.
