Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

First page signed by John Rynier and David [Fales] as witnesses to the original agreement. Page two includes the receipt which is signed by James McCullison, Samuel Tilton (possibly a witness) and John Gleason as a witness. Appears to be a receipt for a cancelled bond for land in Hancock Country, Maine. Receipt shows James McCullison paid his note in full to Henry Knox for $545 plus interest for 100 acres owned by Knox.
