Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that per the (possibly Congressional) resolve, he has gone to the Waldo patent lands and re-examined the settlers's land claims. Explains that he has entered the names of those individuals who are entitled to their land, on a particular plan and survey.

Salem Towne signs his name here as "Town," but the name is more frequently spelled "Towne" according to research.
