Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to Henry Knox from Richard Cutts dated July 25, 1804. Would love to join Knox in Portland, but it is impossible at present, because he is expecting ships to arrive from the West Indies very soon. May be able to visit next month at St. George's.
