Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that the bearer of the letter, a Mr. [Romanie], is the Catholic instructor for the Passamaquoddy and Penobscot tribes. He is moving to Knox's neighborhood and would like Knox's help and advice. Lincoln writes that he is sure Knox will meet with him, as Knox is "no bigot."
