At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Does not yet know the exact day he will set out to return to Thomaston. Must wait for the arrival of Colonel [likely Israel] Thorndike to negotiate a deal. Will send his son [Henry Jackson Knox] home with money to pay the workmen.

Boston 12th Novr 1805 Tuesday
I know not what to say as to the precise day when I shall set out on my return - The person Colo Thorndike with whom I have affected something was to have been in Town yesterday - but he did not come. I am expecting him today and if he arrives, and I could accomplish another object of which I have had some [in aspect], I should be able to fix the day. I shall by my son endevor to send off money to pay in part the workmen, provided he will go [time] enough - He talks of Monday the 18th I find the letter I wrote on Sunday will not reach you until you receive this I am in haste but with perfect [strikeout] affection yours
