Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Unsigned, but handwriting suggests the author is Henry Knox. Invites Malcom to perform a survey of lands Knox sold to Mr. [Israel] Thorndike, Mr. Sears, and Mr. Prescot. Adds that a Mr. [Lothrop] Lewis will be performing a survey on behalf of Thorndkike, Sears and Prescot. Insists that the survey be performed with "the most perfect accuracy." Describes the details of the survey.
