Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Initialled twice by Knox. This document was sent to James Swan. Will accept a payment of $12,000 and $18,000 loan at 6 percent interest, payable annually, in return for 100,000 acres of land. The land is probably in Maine. Guarantees the land will not cost more than 30 cents per acre.
