Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Document notes that Arthur St. Clair's new wife Phebe Bayard stands to inherit from James Bowdoin at the time of her marriage. Now that she is married, the document outlines the money and property she receives. Signed by Arthur and Phebe St. Clair, as well as by William Tyng and Robert Duncan as witnesses.
