Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Documents a lease of land negotiated by Thomas Goldthwait between the heirs of Brigadier General Samuel Waldo on the one part, and [possibly his son] Thomas Goldthwait Jr. Signed by Thomas Goldthwait and Thomas Goldthwait Jr., as well as by Jonathan [Lowder] and Francis Archbald, Jr. as witnesses (though all signatures are in the same hand).
