Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 70,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World to soldiers’ letters from World War II and Vietnam. Writes to inform Waldo of the death of his father the previous December. Discusses the business his father had with Waldo's father, Brigadier General Samuel Waldo, who is also deceased. Asks Waldo to prolong the term of Palairet's land grant, which is expiring. Adds that his family has found itself in difficult financial circumstances following the death of Palairet's father.
