Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Date of 1784 added later in pencil. Addressed to the "Commissioners Appointed by Act of Parliament for enquiring into the Losses & Services of the American Loyalists." Discusses the lands and properties to which she is entitled as heir to her father Brigadier General Samuel Waldo, as well as her brother Samuel Waldo. Outlines the history of the Waldo patent, beginning with King Charles the First granting the Muscongus patent to the Council of Plymouth. Enumerates the acreage and value of lands to which Hannah Flucker has a claim.
