Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Two receipts are included on the same page. The first receipt is signed by William Cox for receiving two pounds and eight shillings from Henry Knox on 1 January 1785 for eight loads of goods. The second receipt is signed by William Mackintosh for receiving three pounds and 14 shillings and five on 1 January 1785 from Knox.
