Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses a petition Michael Jackson is presenting to Congress for compensation for the wounds he received while [fighting in the Revolutionary War]. Says Jackson is requesting half of a Brigadier General's salary which was the rank he held at the close of the war. Encloses (not included) the memorial Jackson submitted to Congress in 1783.
