Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Transcription of a deed from Ferdinand Gorges to sell land in New England to George Cleeve and Richard Tucker. States the deed was dated 27 January 1686 and recorded 26 June 1660. The former year is a mistranscription; historical records date the original deed to 1636.
