Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by I. Craig, Major of Artillery to Henry Knox, Brigadier General of Artillery. Lists stores of shells, powder, cartridges, muskets, rifles, swords, etc. Fort Pitt was the site of present day Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Fort McIntosh became the town of Beaver, Pennsylvania. Document is one long narrow sheet folded over many times. Dimensions are approximate.
