Knox requests Washington to grant a 12-14 day leave of absence to Lieutenant Colonel Johnson of Colonel Swift's regiment. Notes that Johnson's family is in distress due to a shortage of grain.

Lieut. Colonel Johnson of Colonel Swifts regiment is [strike-out] [inserted: very sollicitous] to have leave of absence for twelve or fourteen days. His family is large, and are in distress upon account of the short crops of grain in the vicinity of their residence Major Smith is with the regiment. If your Excellency [struck: could with propriety] should [strike-out] [inserted: find] it proper to grant him this indulgence [strike-out] it would [struck: contribute much to the happiness] [inserted: relieve the anxiety] of a deserving officer.
