Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Popkin informs Knox, Commander of West Point, "...it was, and is, my full intention to comply strictly with orders, and... no other circumstance whatever but the want of Money, has prevented me being at the Quarters..." Knox previously ordered Popkin to travel to West Point, New York, to defend himself against charges leveled by men in Colonel Crane's Regiment. In GLC02437.10112, Popkin informed Knox that lack of funds prevented him from complying with orders.
