Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses business transactions dealing with various amounts of money. $20,000 and $5,000 are needed "to complete the payment which will become due in sixty days after the survey shall be notified; and upon the puctuality of which, the validity of the agreement with the state will most materially depend." Goes on to write about further payments which are due and a difficult situation with William Duer concerning a purchase of land. Content suggests Henry Knox as the author and was previously assessed as such. Light water damage as blurred some lines in the lower left corner. Letterpress copy. Watermarked.
