Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lists charges to Knox's account from Indian treaties. Total amounts to $3,479.39 ¼. Two notes. First dated 12 November. States "I certify that the above Acct. is a True Copy the original of which is filed on Record in this Office." Second dated 16 November. States "In addition to my Certificate of this date, I further Certify that that Balance of Three thousand four hundred and seventy six Dollars 39¼/100 has been accounted for by the Secretary of War as appear by Auditor Statement No. 1756 dated Nov. 16. 1791." Watermarked "S W L" and with a hunting horn.
