Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Serves as a receipt of sale for 2 million acres of land in Maine, from Henry Jackson and Royal Flint to Henry Knox and William Greene. States that Jackson and Flint had clear title, having originally purchased the land from Samuel Philips, Leonard Jarvis and John Read. Notes that a copy of this document was delivered to both Henry Knox and William Greene. Date previously inferred, written in pencil. Most likely written in Massachusetts.
