Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Sends an autograph and informs Cist, "The inclosed is all I can get for you. I have cut it from an old book."

Moore wrote the famous Christmas poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas," which eventually became known by its opening phrase, "Twas The Night Before Christmas." Cist was a poet and prominent collector of autographs and portraits.
