At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports no vacancies of lieutenancies in brigade. There is one captain vacancy. Written from Headquarters.

Reynolds was killed at Gettysburg. While placing the first of his infantry in line he was instantly killed by a confederate shot. Accounts vary as to whether it was a stray bullet or one from a sharpshooter. He had been expected to be appointed commander after Hooker resigned but unquestioningly accepted command under his former subordinate George G. Meade.
