Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Notes that he will be at the Columbia House immediately after the election, and will be glad by that time to leave the State of Ohio. Probably written in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where Stevens lived. Recipient's name is illegible.

Stevens was a United States Representative from Pennsylvania 1849-1852 and 1859-1868, and was known as a Radical Republican.
