Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

TRUMBULL, Joseph, (1737-1778), Delegate from Connecticut; born in Lebanon, Conn., March 11, 1737; was graduated from Harvard College in 1756; elected to the Continental Congress in 1774, but did not attend; served in the Continental Army as commissary general with the rank of colonel from July 19, 1775, to August 2, 1777; was commissioner of the board of war from 1777 until his resignation in April 1778 on account of ill health.
