At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Mr. Arthur Lee of Norfolk, a member of our Legislature for whom I have an esteem, has requested me to introduce to your acquaintance & civilities the bearer Mr. Poinsithe of So. Carolina, who is I doubt not very deserving of yr. attention. Permit me to avail myself of the opportunity furnished by this young Gentn, to assure you of the high satisfaction I have in yr. appointment to France, and to add my sincere wishes that your mission may prove as [struck: graf] grateful and honorable to yourself, as the auspices under which it is undertaken give you reason to expect it may be.
