At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

First English (London) edition with folding Fry-Jefferson map. This book is the first PUBLISHED edition in English (the first English language edition being privately printed by Jefferson in Paris). It was largely written in 1781 and first published in Paris, in French, in 1785. Written in the form of answers to questions about Virginia, Jefferson's book not only covered geography of Virginia, but also government, Indians and slavery.
