Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Believed to be a list of accounts either payable to or owed by the men listed. On the back of the document is a printed summons by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts which has been crossed out with a large "X." Written in pencil on the document is "after 1806."
