At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

M. E. Flitner writes to her daughter about how her trip is progressing, mentioning that she was supposed to leave for Richmond on Tuesday, but the weather is detaining her. Flitner goes on to write that she hopes to be with her daughter again soon and that she has a gift for her when she returns.
