Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

This document contains two letters. The first letter is written by Z. Flitner to his daughter. In this letter he writes about the importance of education and religion. The second letter, dated December 26, is written by Z. Flitner to his wife, M. E. Flitner. In this letter he writes about the weather, his good health, and paying for Sal's ticket from Charleston to Boston.
