Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

J. Henry Flitner writes to his sister detailing his experiences in Trieste, Italy. Flitner talks about the landscape and exploring 10 to 12 miles inland from the coast in a horse and carriage. Flitner ends the letter by telling his sister that he has two small guinea pigs that he will be bringing home for their younger siblings.
