A brief communication from Farragut, requesting the "names and positions of all the vessels in your division on the first and fifteenth of every month." Written on board the U.S.S. Hartford, off Pensacola, Florida, during the Union blockade of major Southern ports. On "Western Gulf Squadron" stationery.
David G. Farragut was the first Admiral in the United States navy and Commander-in-Chief of the U. S. Navy during the Civil War.
John B. Marchand was an officer in the United States Navy. He captained the steamer "Memphis" during the Paraguay expedition, served as Captain of the U.S.S. Lackawanna during the Civil War, later promoted to Commodore.
