At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by Brigadier General Wayne to Colonel Moylan of the 4th Dragoons. Signed twice by Wayne. Discusses operations around New York during the summer of 1780. Written in the heat of the movement while planning actions against the British in New Jersey. Wants Moylan to drive off cattle and to "Oblige the Inhabitants to serve as Guides - letting them know the Consequence of a Deception." Postscript not in Wayne's hand. Noted as a copy on page 3.

Wayne was a member of the Pennsylvania provincial house of representatives in 1774 and 1775. He served in the Revolutionary Army as colonel of the Fourth Regiment of Pennsylvania troops, was commissioned as brigadier general February 21, 1777 and brevetted major general October 10, 1783.
