Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Jones signs partially printed document, pledging his allegiance to the United States of America. Also signed by Jonathan Sargent, Assistant Provost Marshall, Department of the Cumberland. Endorsement on verso, authorizing Jones to practice medicine in Union-occupied Tennessee, signed by General Richard W. Johnson.

Richard W. Johnson was a Union Brigadier General.
Alfred Jones was a Surgeon in the Confederate Army.
