Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

This document is a black and white, printed map depicting towns, rivers and creeks, rail lines, forested areas, and land segments divided by ownership surrounding Petersburg, Virginia. The map is extremely detailed, and includes names associated with the plots of land that are marked.

Gilmer served as Chief Engineer of the Confederate Army.
