Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Irish-born, moved to New York in 1863 to study art. Studied in France and returned to American in 1880. Became an academician in 1882. Among his most famous students was Robert Henri. Mortally injured in a heroic effort to save a child from a railroad accident.
