Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Muster roll of company D, of the 11th regiment of Penn RVC from the 31 day of Decr., 1861 to the 28 Roll of company of Pennsylvania reserves lists men's names, rank, last payday, when, where and by whom they were enlisted, and notes on any sickness or injury. Filled out by Captain William Stewart. Examined and signed by George Meade as Brigadier General and Mustering Officer.

George Meade became commander of the Army of the Potomac in 1863.
