At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Autograph manuscript signed by John H. Hester, a soldier in 12th Kentucky cavalry. Diary contains approximately 84 pages written in pencil. Also includes printed calendar pages at the beginning and advertisements at the end. Includes commentary regarding his participation in Sherman's Atlanta campaign from 28 April to 19 September 1864.
