Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Livingston had applied to the Town Council of Albany for an increase in salary from £15 to £20, because the county of Albany, which had previously allotted Livingston £5, had discontinued this practice. However, the Council denied the request, claiming the burden of mounting debts.
