At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Began on the first of January 1701 and tells of Livingston giving a friend of his son John the clothes John was to be married in. Livingston also includes several business dealings with his observations on his son's marriage. Pages 3 & 4 of this journal are written in Dutch.
