At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 70,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World to soldiers’ letters from World War II and Vietnam. Winthrop sends news of John and Mary Livingston's [having wed in April 1701] arrival to New London with Samuel Vetch on the 7th of June, on their way to their trading mission in Canada. Winthrop states "[I] hope you did well understand [their plan] well before hand and I wish it had been contrived that by an Indian or other wayes wee might have heard of their Arrivall."
