At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The document includes two separate letters to William Livingston. In the first, Robert thanks his cousin for his help with the bail, and mentions some other financial matters that he would like William to pursue. In the second letter, Robert asks William to help him "accommodate a matter with R. Blackham." Docketed on recto.
