At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Gilbert explains that he and his wife have not yet christened their child, as they are waiting for Robert and the rest of the family to arrive, which has been delayed due to weather. He also mentions that the child seems sickly, which makes them uneasy. Docketed on address leaf.
