At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The Sachems request that the part of their former proposition stating their resolve never to join the English in a war be blotted out and forgotten. They explain that the rising cost of goods caused them to initially make this statement, and they therefore request that the King lower the prices so that trade may be more successful.
