Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Leyborne, Rossley, and Rockiliff state that they have just been informed of a new law that prohibits the exportation of wheat, flour, and biscuit to the Kingdom of Portugal. They request, however, that they not be forced to pay a penalty due to the new restriction. Followed by a note from Morton Rockiliff discussing a trading payment. Docketed on address leaf.
