Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

In the trial of Robert and Johannis Van Deusen v. Josiah Loomis, Matthias Van Deusen declares that "the place called Taghkanick now lies and has been as long as this Deponent can remember in the County of Albany and within the Province of New York." He also states that the farms owned by the Halenbook's and Josiah Loomis lie within this territory. Van Deusen signed with his mark.
