Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Agnes Tingley informs Robert Livingston, Jr. that he is indebted to her father, the late Captain Tingley, and notes that "such are our Curcumstances that the money would be of very great service & I am emboldened to believe (by hearing of your Compasionate Disposition) that you will not Deny the Just request of the Widow & Fatherless."
