Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

John Schuyler writes that he has baptized his son, and asked James Duane to be the Godfather, which he hopes agrees with Robert, Jr. He also states that he fears he has just met with a great loss of money at sea, as he has been expecting a vessel for 5 weeks. Docketed on address leaf.
