Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Breasee explains that because of unfortunate circumstances, he has been reduced to a most desperate financial state. He therefore asks Robert, Jr. to allow him to sell part of his farm so that he may buy a few horses and "Labour a Little to Get Food for my fameley." Docketed on address leaf.
